Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Jan Briane A — 07 Oct 2015
Rightfully apologetic for ending up to be the maudlin tear-jerker we'd expected it to be from the get-go, but judging it on how it fits the mold does it no justice. The script, the acting, the score, the editing, and the directing all fall perfectly into place - there is just too much beauty and novelty to appreciate in these aspects to even have to worry about the formula.
I see the case for it being pretentious, but it's easy to forget that it's being narrated by a teenager with a special fondness for foreign/vintage films. What the hell would you expect?
