Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Curtis M — 15 Feb 2017
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a coming of age comedy-drama about a high school senior who is forced to befriend a classmate who is terminally ill. While it has the same concept of most coming of age high school movies about a high school teenager who is having trouble fitting in, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl adds a whole new level of originality.
From the movies that Greg and Earl make to the quick and witty dialogue, I had a really good time with this movie. I thought Thomas Mann did a really good job of being a subtle teenager who was unraveling his emotions bit by bit as the movie went on.
It never tried to force anything and I think the subtle, dry humor added to its originality. Once the movie transitioned to a more serious tone, I was totally locked in, and felt really felt for the characters.
For flaws, even though I really liked the characters like Earl and the history teacher, I felt like they were a little underdeveloped and sometimes just there to say the right thing to move the plot a long.
