Review of McFarland, USA (2015) by Mx L — 19 Apr 2015
Niki Caro is directing this Disney production that feels every bit like an inspirational true story family movie from start to finish. Kostner is once again impeccable and seems to be on a mission acting in films that have a peaceful message against racism and stupidity these days.
After the excellent Black Or White, he finds here another interesting part as a coach in the farming town of McFarland. The film is impeccable, really well shot, lighten and produced, there is nothing to criticize about the technique, it's fair and square like a traditional Disney film.
The film is very funny and plays a lot on the digressions between white and Latinos in America, but we have to remember the film is set in 1987 and back then the Chicano movement was still pretty active and the fights for equal pay, rights and status was still much debated.
Overall it's an interesting film, inspiring definitely and in some ways very critical of the immigration situation in the US. A good entertainment.
