Review of McFarland, USA (2015) by Jason T — 21 Jun 2016
I loved this! I hate Kevin Costner, but he was actually fine in this. Excellent performances (by everyone else except White's kids), but what stands out is the team, and not just because they're good, but because it's unusual for kids to be good.
I loved the direction and the writing. They made it light, yet serious. And it wasn't too emotional, or moving, or inspirational. It knew what it was about, and knew that that was enough. If someone chooses to be moved or inspired or emotionally effected by it, that's their choice.
But you don't have to. I didn't like White's family. Maria Bello's performance was alright, but I hated the kids. And I hated everything about their storyline. That stuff also made it feel longer.
There was one portion in particular that really sucked because it was just postponing the finale of the movie. I wish they would have just taken that crap out. And they easily could have. But that's a very minor complaint in an overall excellent movie!
