McFarland, USA is a pleasant surprise. I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. It carries ALL the Disney sports movie cliches (a losing team wins at the end, one of the player's parents doesn't want him running cross country/going to college, the movie is based on an inspiring true story, the coach grows closer with his team, etc.
etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.), but it works thanks to its likable characters, passionate direction by Niki Caro, and heartwarming moments. It's nothing different, but it's certainly enjoyable.
