Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Rob C — 31 Aug 2009
There are only two films on my list that, when I watch them, I actually believe that the movies were filmed during the time period in which they were shot. One is Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon," and the other is "McCabe & Mrs.
Miller." This is a deeply haunting, dark, touching and funny film that cannot be classified. Is it a western? A drama? A comedy? It's a little of all and then some. The cinematography (by Vilmos Zsigmond) and music (by Leonard Cohen) set the foundations like nothing I have ever seen or heard on film.
An astonishing masterpiece of film-making.
