Review of Mazes and Monsters (1982) by B B — 26 Mar 2006
God I miss those crazy hats..
Tom Hanks (The Burbs) stars as Robbie, a product of 80?s WASP upbringing. His overbearing father and drunken mother speed him off to his freshman year of college in their Benz, the whole time arguing. Oh, Robbie..
Hanks quickly makes friends with a group who needs an extra player in their Mazes and Monsters game. It?s all about the ninth level baby. These kids know their stuff and get crazy all night long. Taking on the role of a holy man, Hanks is drawn deeper into the game when the team takes their adventures into the local caverns..
Oh yes, it gets better. The movie rockets to a harrowing rooftop intervention at the World Trade Center as Hanks is convinced that the reality he sees is that of Mazes and Monsters. .

The one thing I truly love about this movie is the costuming. Everyone fits a cliché and when in doubt, put someone in a crazy hat. It starts off with some bad WWII German S&M thing and ends with a Sherlock. .
Made for TV straight from the soul..
