Review of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) by Tom B — 17 Nov 2015
The second Maze Runner doesn't quite have the same magic that the original movie did, but just like Harry Potter and Hunger Games; the characters begin to grow on you by the time the movie ends (because you've now experienced over four hours with them).
Most of the film feels very unoriginal in its story context. The idea of traveling through a desert, working with rebels and escaping creatures living in the sand along with a corrupt empire; dates all the way back to the original Star Wars.
Same thing with the survival scenarios. The first half of the movie is entirely comprised of familiar characters (because you became attached after watching the original movie) running away from soldiers and zombies.
Yes, Maze Runner 2 actually has zombies. The special effects aren't anything to die for, so something like this needs a smart story to carry it. In my opinion, this is the missing ingredient that made the original movie such a success.
Maze Runner 2 is all too average; stealing ideas from half the adventure/sci-fi films released over the past decade. When it's over, you'll say it wasn't so bad, but at same time you'll probably forget everything that happened by the time Part 3 gets released.
