Review of Max Havelaar: or, The Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company (1976) by Daniel I — 05 Nov 2012
Flawed but interesting epic yarn set in mid 19th century Dutch-owned Indonesia. Idealism meets colonialism in an exotic setting. The mood is pretty grim, though the acting is fairly good and the direction is spot on.
Although the film doesn't wow you, the subject matter is fascinating. However, you are still left wondering what could have been achieved that wasn't.
