Review of Maudie (2016) by John T — 24 Apr 2017
No CGI, No Murders, No Glitzy big cities, No Haute Courture, No fast cars and not a single cell phone in sight... but what a GEM of a Movie. The story could not be more simple and the setting is about as rustic as it gets.
Sally Hawkins is PERFECT in her portrayal of this frail, simple East Coast Canadian woman who just liked to paint.
Ethen Hawke was also a great bookend as first the "employer" and then the husband.
Did I mention that their entire house was about half the size of most people's living rooms?
Everything works on all levels in this film: the script, the acting, the location... EVERYTHING!!!
There was a massive round of applause at the end of the movie in the art house theatre I went to see this film in: something not usually seen .... but in this case so very deserved.
Bring on the Oscar for Ms. Hawkins!
