Review of Maudie (2016) by Alan W — 05 Feb 2018
A charming and underplayed film about Maudie, a young arthritic woman who decides to live her own independent life after answering an ad for a live-in maid made by a gruff and illiterate man played by Ethan Hawke as if he is auditioning for the Dark Knight circa the Bale years.
She is a budding painter and he is a fishmonger amongst many other jobs he does and romance and co-dependency soon blossom between the two even though they are literally chalk and cheese. Their relationship is old fashioned but loving even though there are some uncomfortable scenes bordering on domestic abuse that will not chime with current thinking but the wonderful Sally Hawkins, who once again disappears into the role, makes it bearable and watchable.
Her character's progress to eventual artistic success is fairly standard stuff but her story is well told without being mawkish, though I think there is an overuse of diddly Irish music.
