Review of Maudie (2016) by Hassan I — 14 Jun 2017
Sally Hawkins delivers a powerful performance in "Maudie", a deeply moving biopic about a real-life artist. It is not easy to bring a true story to the big-screen, but this is one of those movies that succeeds.
It's mainly due to the two lead performances from Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke. Sally Hawkins is marvelous in the role of a woman with a severe disability. Sincere, heartfelt and charming, she manages to do justice to a challenging role.
Ethan Hawke delivers the best performance of his career as an abusive but loving husband. Although the character he plays is often unlikable, he manages to make him a sympathetic human being. These award-worthy performances along with gorgeous cinematography make "Maudie" a must-see.
Despite a long and drawn out running time, "Maudie" is a well-made biopic that is worth seeing for it's powerful performances. Hopefully, these performances won't be forgotten come awards season.
