Review of Match Point (2005) by Rainer K — 23 Jul 2013
This is the film that got me into Woody Allen and so it certainly lives up to his' hype in my mind! It quietly bubbles on the surface of its cool exterior until everything fizzles up and lives up to what, the majority of the film, promises.
There's a good cast sprinkled out and the performances fit with the tone which may be somewhat annoying at first but is definitely worth following through with to see how the film works it in.
Style over substance may describe some of Allen's more recent works but not here- its style simply makes the substance stand out more. A great modern-noir that may suffer from some of the faults of the genre (its not the most original thing you'll ever see for instance and it is far from finessed) but it also works as a thriller and has some layers about class too- worth a watch.
