Review of Match Point (2005) by Kenneth B — 16 Jan 2012
I'm surprised to read all the good reviews for this one. First off it is the weakest Woody Allen film that I have seen and there are a few reasons. For a start Scarlett Johansson is rubbish in it. The reason being that the role demands her to be dramatic.
In her most successful roles (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Lost In Translation) she just has to be there, to show up and particularly in the case of Lost In Translation the film does the work around her.
Match Point does very little in this sense, it is unengaging, ponderous and lacks any of the warmth that all of Allen's great films possess. Take Crimes and Misdemeanours, which was a film with a darker edge down one line of narrative but the other had a lighter heart which balanced out well.
Allen doesn't do great straight drama and it's evident in the dialogue which would sound at home on ITV on a Saturday night. The whole thing feels very forced.
