Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by Gabriel C — 01 May 2008
If ever there was a movie that simply "doesn't", this would probably be the best example possible. This movie doesn't laugh at itself enough considering that it doesn't do anything original. It doesn't represent its source material well, and as much as it wishes it could it doesn't out-Star Wars Star Wars.
That is the key problem with this movie when it gets right down to it. The movie adaptation of Masters of the Universe is a blatant Star Wars knock-off of the worst variety. Everything related to "Eternia" is lifted from the Star Wars trilogy, and even the music is a rip-off of John Williams' work on the Star Wars and Superman scores. Considering how many knock-offs there are of Star Wars I think it's fair to say that the world could do without another one. Especially when said knock-off is as badly directed as this...
