Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by Bethany F — 03 Oct 2008
This film used to give me nightmares, I remember the scene where Courtney Cox's wound is revealed being much more grotesque as a child.
The music for the film was very well produced as were the effects.
I loved the costume design of the film, that it was remarkably close to that of the 80s cartoon, especially characters like Evil Lynn and Skeletor.
Evil Lynn used to scare me much more than Skeletor, but thats probabley because Skeletor's makeup didn't enable him to emote very well.
Dolph Lundgren was I believe a good choice for this role. as hard as he can be to understand from time to time, and as distracting as his manly physique can be (as a young girl) I think he portrayed He-man very well.
James Tolkan was extremely annoying in this film, as he is in most he plays that "just want to kill you" character quite well, and you really do believe he is sincere in all his ridiculous threats.
Altogether I thought this film was as good as the other films of its same type "Howard the Duck, Super Mario Bros and Mom and Dad save the World".
Very inventive sets, characters and great adaptation of a cartoon series.
What else could you ask for?
Except better makeup for Skeletor.
