Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by Jacob F — 28 May 2011
Masters of the Universe is a child-hood favorite of mine and is now also a guilty pleasure. I enjoy the film for how cheesy it is and for its many action sequences. I also enjoy the various characters including He-Man and Skeletor.
Dolph Lundgren looks the part and he knows how to fight and he has a decent presence, and thats all that is pretty much needed for the part. The real standout in the film is Frank Langella as Skeletor.
He literally pours everything he has into the character and has a blast while doing so. Langella even reported that Skeletor is one of his favorite roles. The story plays like a second-rate version of Star Wars and there are various campy lines.
But overall, I think that the films cheesiness is what makes it fun to watch.
