Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by Christopher S — 04 Oct 2012
Ok 4 stars out of 5 only if you accept the suspension of disbelief. If you can't do that prepare for 90 minutes of sadness. But after watching this again with the director commentary turned on I had a whole new appreciation for this 1980's gem.
Let me share a few take aways with you. Focus on the brilliance of Frank Langella as he acts through the incredible costume and make up. He has tons of memorable lines including quotes from Shakespeare and ones he improvised or wrote himself in advance.
He absolutely steals the movie. But it's no wonder he does. Director Gary Goddard states he essentially marginalized our Dolph Lundgren played hero ultimately making the movie about the villain. I think Langella has twice as much screen time and dialogue than his co-star! Why he didn't get top billing is a mystery.
If you watch for that it is very clear and with good reason. Remember this movie was the first of its kind....a live action feature based on a toy line. The budget was small and the cast range in quality.
But Goddard still gets his way with a lot of cute touches you might miss if you're not looking for them. Look for the "Wizard of Oz" ending right down to the gold bows in Gwildor's hair just like the Cowardly Lion.
Listen for characters saying lines from "The Lord of the Rings". Wait for the bonus scene at the end of the credits! At the end of the day it's an 80's movie based on a toy marketed to kids.
If you accept that going in, you'll have a good journey. Just one question remains my fellow Eternians. Why do they put their food on these little white sticks? Just ask Man-At-Arms. He'll tell you.
