Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by Explodingboy1989 — 25 Dec 2008
Dolph Lundgren stars in this 1987 Cannon attempt at starting a He Man movie franchise. I saw this in theatres opening day when I was seven years old. Being a Masters of the Universe fan from the beginning, I remember the movie seeming a bit anticlimactic and disappointing as it all took place on earth.
I've grown to love the movie for what it is, and accept it as a different take on He-Man mythos, one that makes more sense if this movie is viewed in terms of being based on the toy-line than on the cartoon.
The reality is, this film isn't all bad: Frank Langella hams it up as Skeletor, definitely taking the role to new heights for the type of movie this is; Meg Foster is hot as Evil Lyn, and Dolph pulls off the big guy pretty well.
The studio attempted to make a sequel the following year, but bounced the rights check to Hasbro. The sets from the aborted sequel eventually found their way into the Van Damme vehicle Cyborg (1989).
