Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Kevin M — 23 Dec 2009
2003 was not kind to this masterpiece. Another film I adore, Return of the King, robbed Peter Weir of a must deserved Best Picture win. Absolutely one of the best films of the decade. One of my all time favorite movies.
Master and Commander is a smart and very well executed study of the time period that it portrays. Anyone who said that this film was lacking character development or intellectually stimulating themes must be a complete and utter idiot.
This movie is pure beauty. The contrast of Capt. Aubrey's old worldview and Dr. Maturin's modern-man philosophies creates a film that allows the viewer to understand the changing times like no other movie that I have ever seen.
The richness of the story and its many wonderful themes creates a well researched and superbly executed experience. This film is emotionally satisfying and visually stunning. I love, love, love this movie.
