Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Kelechi O — 15 Dec 2010
At its core, this film is very, very basic: a bunch of guys on a boat chasing after a bunch of guys on another boat all over the Atlantic. Wouldn't be too gripping a film on its own. Add some interesting sub-plots (including a "curse"), a number of lead actors (Crowe and Bettany included) playing officer roles well, and supporting cast playing a typical early 19th Century English man-o-war crew in a believable way, wild storms and weather changes, a mix of triumph and tragedy, and some fiery (and very well executed) battle sequences (especially one that starts only 5 minutes after the beginning of the movie), and what you get is a film that will hold your attention for over 2 hours.
Its a film that I keep coming back to.
