Review of M*A*S*H (1970) by Steve S — 20 Oct 2009
Altman is a master director and this could be his greatest movie. The story of a mobile surgical hospital dealing with the physical toll of a dirty war. Humor saves and elevates the story and it is easily one of the best comedies I have ever experienced.
Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould are the original Hawkeye and Trapper John and with all due respect to Alan Alda and Wayne Rogers they were better. The pathos of saving lives only to see them wounded again is a particular form of hell and this desperation feeds the manic humor.
Sally Kellerman's Hot Lips is both staid and smoldering, an incredible actress at her best. This one should be part of everyone's DVD collection.
