Review of Masculin Féminin (1966) by Jurgen H — 23 Nov 2007
Romantic innocence? really? I think it's much more romantic immaturity. I can't tell if godard is being critical of his subjects because there certainly is a lot to find ridiculous in the children of marx and coca-cola.
boys become revolutionaries without true understanding of the movements they profess to believe in, protected by their middle-class upbringing, all the while focusing the bulk of their attention and intelligence on how to get girls in bed.
there's nothing abnormal about this, and i'm no puritan, and the juxtaposition of the random violence helps to cast the romantic entanglements in a more "innocent" light. the one thing i've noticed throughout most of godard is an eye for a truly beautiful woman, but the camera lens is often almost pornographic in its treatment of these beautiful women, whose characters in development are far inferior and more sterotypical than the males.
all in all though, as per usual with godard he breaks rules and I watch intently.
