Review of Mascots (2016) by Matt D — 14 Oct 2016
My favorite film comedy of all time is 'Waiting for Guffman' so it goes without saying that the coming of 'Mascots' was a highly anticipated event in my movie watching calendar.
Unfortunately this film continues the noticeable slip in quality featured in Christopher Guest's more recent work. Many gags feel stale or repetitious from past mockumentaries and most of the new cast additions to the troupe fail to meet the comic genius of the likes of Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, and Michael McKean who are all sadly absent.
There is still a nice dose of laugh out loud moments thanks to the likes of Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge, Parker Posey, and Guest himself as his 'Guffman' character, Corky St. Clair but overall this feels like more of misfire than a worthy edition the ranks of Guest's work from the 90s and early 2000s.
