Sticking more closely to the book does not a great movie make. Not fun, not exciting, not scary, not moving. Great period production and adequate direction, but DeNiro is totally miscast as the monster, and the film is terribly paced.
Gimme the Brooks or even Karloff versions above this flaccid telling anytime. And Van Helsing wasn't perfect, but I loved its energy - and its monster a lot more that this staid version.
