Review of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) by Scott S — 30 Oct 2009

Some people bad mouth this movie because it isn't high on the scare factor but those people don't understand what the movie is about. This is not a horror movie, the horror is just a sub-genre. It's not meant to scare us but tell a story like the old horror movies did.

In this take on the classic Mary Shelley novel, the creature is more dimensional we can sympathize with him and understand his motives. Even though he is the villain we understand where his anger lies.

The only problem with the movie for me was the acting of Kenneth Branagh sometimes it seems believable and interesting. But other times it felt read and emotionless. Although some people say it is quite a slow movie I think they rushed the start of the film where his Mum passes away. I feel that they didn't grieve for her enough that it makes the character feel weak and less important but she is the main reason for Victor's actions.

I consider this to be one of the greatest Frankenstein movies ever made up there with Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and of course the delightful Mel Brook's spoof Young Frankenstein (1974).

But this is only one guy's opinion.
