Review of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) by Gordon C — 01 Dec 2009

Frankenstein is one of my favourite novels, and I had previously admired Kenneth Branagh's films and performances. Add to that a cast which includes the likes of Robert DeNiro, John Cleese and Ian Holm, and I anticipated this movie being an absolute screen gem.

I don't know what went wrong, but gem it ain't.

DeNiro is the only one who comes out of the mix looking (ironically) good. The rest of the film is overplayed and overblown, and just downright unengaging.

And how do they have the nerve to call it "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" when they changed the story from the novel? It's not Mary Shelley's at all. Her story was about something completely different.
