Branagh takes a similar directorial approach as Coppola did with Dracula a couple years before. Maybe I'm missing something, but the deliberate excess and extravagant execution of absolutely everything becomes wearisome within half an hour.
The film has some strong scenes, and the story itself is full of powerful implications, but Branagh's decisions behind the camera don't work for me. De Niro is incapable of delivering a performance that's less than interesting, so it goes without saying that he does a great job.
A misfire worth checking out.
