Review of Mary Reilly (1996) by Daryl . — 26 Apr 2008
Not half bad!
Filmed in the style of an "older" type horror movie in that lots of creepy, suspicious, eerie, unsettling things happen throughout the first 90 minutes or so (but nothing really "scary" or "shocking"... before leading up to the big "pay-off" towards the end.
That's when you REALLY notice the very effective sense of malevolence that the film has created leading up to it's climax...t.
Very, very nice to look at. Excellent Victorian style sets and costumes and (probably) my favourite performance by Julia Roberts in ANY movie she's done...
Better than I thought it would be.... without being "over-the-top" bloody, gory and graphic.
