Review of Mary Queen of Scots (2018) by John L — 23 Jan 2019
Beautifully shot and with strong lead performances from Saoirse Ronan. The portrayal of Mary as a tall, physical woman, emotionally strong, and a proud leader is what the history books tell us. She was buffeted by the most horrific political and religious winds and the portrayal of the machinations of the nobility is bang on.
I particularly enjoyed the directorial handling of her relationship with Lennox Lord Darnley. Mary seduces him (in the interests of conception, lust, and an heir to the throne ). Female empowerment for grown ups - without the excess of the PC brigade.
