Review of Mary Poppins (1964) by Entertain Me O — 19 Sep 2013
What can I say! A fantastic film for all the family. Excellent performance by Dick Van Tyke (Bert), great acting, dancing and singing - this man is a legend! I also hope he got double pay, as he also plays the chairman of the bank! Not forgetting the visually stunning Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) - although she does little dancing, she has gives Mary Poppins excellent characterisation and has an amazing voice.
For a film of the 1960s, it provides a story of magic. The film effects are captivating (for example Poppins has a magic carpet bag which seems to carry almost everything but the kitchen sink and she has her own version of a magic mirror on the wall!).
Kids jump into magic paintings, ride on cartoon horses and climb over chimney pots etc! But the film isn't all about fantasy, it's also educational -for example, the two young children learn how "tuppence" (money) can be smartly invested in a bank, rather than thrown away to feed wild birds.
I also personally enjoyed the views of Edwardian London and famous landmarks such as Saint Pauls Cathedral. Finally, although the film is over two hours long, it still managed to win the attention of my 4 year old son, who is happy to watch it again and again! - It's all round a thumbs up from the Marsh-Lloyds!
