Review of Mary Poppins (1964) by Amanda C — 19 Mar 2013
Mary Poppins rides on the performance of Julie Andrews. Her diction is second to none and she captures the sharpness and no nonsense of the character while still retaining the exuberance and free spirit that she showed in the Sound of Music.
Kids still love this film and it's easy to see why. The special effects are state of the art for the time and are so well integrated and fun that the fact that they don't quite hold up now is forgotten.
The music is fun and the Technicolor looks fantastic. Unfortunately what could have been a great film is somewhat marred by Dick Van Dyke hamming it up with one of the most atrocious Cockney accents I've ever heard and all around subpar dancing.
