Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Karolina M — 04 Jan 2011
It's a beautiful story about two lonely souls at opposite ends of the world, who become pen pals and correspond with each other throughout their lifespan. The voice acting by Hoffman and Bethany Whitmore is spectacular, but the narrator (Barry Humphries) was overbearing and I became tired in the beginning of the constant set-up to who these characters are.
But the film really shines in the beautifully written letters these characters send to one another, and the film's rather dark twists and turns sustain it. Overall, a neat surprise and one I would recommend, though this is definitely one of the darkest animated movies I have seen in a good long while.
