Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Chen Y — 18 Feb 2011
By the same people who made the oscar-winning short film harvey krumpet, this full-length film is similar in animation style and tone, but even more engaging and interesting. first off, the level of detail and effort put into the claymation is incredibly amazing.
the unique style of the character and set design is also eye-opening and makes this film a visual treat, even with its sparse use of color. and the story isn't lacking either. two unlikely people on opposite sides of the world randomly become pen pals and ultimately friends.
I really enjoyed observing the very unusual friendship that develops between a little australian girl with no friends and an obese man in nyc with asperger's. this movie has some cute and funny moments, but also some darker and more serious moments that will really make you reflect on your own life.
not recommended for younger viewers, but definitely worth seeing for those older.
