Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Paul N — 05 Oct 2011
Not a movie to see when you're feeling a little down. The Netflix write up for this made it sound considerably cheerier than it is. Poignant at times, painfully brutal throughout. I should have guessed that Philip Seymour Hoffman was involved. His voiceover was perfect.
While the movie strives for a happy ending, it's oddly out of place with the rest of the film and ultimately far from believable. Life is messy and complicated and not always pretty. The film's theology and philosophy allow for no greater hope beyond these simple truths. It would have been more consistent if the film had concluded this way rather than attempt to lighten it artificially.
