Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Daenerys S — 10 Jul 2014
When a young girl is bored, she decides to look through a phone book and randomly choose someone to write to. This little girl from Australia named Mary chooses a man from New York named Max. These two become each others only friends in their lonely lives, and write to each other about the struggles they are going through and what their lives have been like so far.
Mary and Max is a surprisingly simple concept that is made into an intelligent, creative, and emotional movie thanks to the directing and writing of Adam Elliot.
Mary and Max has is a very emotional film which shows many struggles from obesity to bullying to self consciousness and the most popular conflict during the story... Finding love. The story (while at first look may seem for kids) is not at all for kids. This movie is more likely to appeal to adults because of the deep, thought provoking, and realistic conflicts Mary and Max describe in their letters to each other.
In the end , Mary and Max is an artfully crafted, beautiful, emotional, and realistic movie that really deserves a lot more press than it has gotten.
