Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Lewis E — 20 Feb 2015
Although at times adopting childish humour, this is an animation geared towards adults due to its depressing themes of death, obesity, mental illness and loneliness. The letter-correspondence narrative structure can get mundane, not helped by the drab colour scheme, but the exchange of letters and clay design allows for a more reflective and intimate storytelling of these two poor souls.
It doesn't particularly shed light on any of its themes in massive detail, thus not equipping the film's messages with full strength, but it is an animation which displays originality while inducing thought provocation and emotion through its endearing, bitter-sweet story.
