Review of Marwencol (2010) by Bob L — 12 May 2011
Interesting tale of a guy who was once a nasty alcoholic, who gets his head smashed in from a bar room fight, and recovers from the coma with no memory of his life beforehand as a different person. In learning to walk and talk all over again, he immerses himself in a backyard village of action figures and dolls called Marwencol, and tells their intricate stories through photographs as a form of therapy.
As these photographs become public we share his thoughts on his personal 'therapy' being shared amongst the artistic community (and now the world). What starts off as a form of 'freak show', becomes a curious insight into what makes a persons character, and indeed, from the support of friends in his village, what constitutes friendship.
I suppose it could have gone into this deeper, but might have made the film too long.
