Review of Marty (1955) by Chris M — 01 Feb 2011
Outstanding! What a great movie. It's one of the few underdog movies out there that doesn't make us feel like a fool. I especially enjoyed Ernest Borgnine's performance as a shy, nice guy that seems to finish last.
His loneliness pulls at your heart without making you feel like a fool for rooting for him. The girl played by Betsy Blair does a wonderful job of playing the shy girl who is treated as an ugly duckling.
It feels authentic when quite frankly, most movies aren't. The ending is a bit on the abrupt side, but some movies don't need the "wrapped up in a neat little package" treatment. Sometimes the great movies don't need that.
