Review of Marty (1955) by Grant S — 23 Feb 2011
One of the most underrated films I have ever seen and definitely epitomized the culture of the 1950s. Ernest Borgnine was excellent as Marty and proved he could do much more than be a great villain as seen in From Here to Eternity or a rough and tough general as seen in the Dirty Dozen.
Also, if Betsy Blair is a "dog", then I want all dogs to look like her. She was very good as well and her chemistry with Borgnine was one of the strong points of the film. The writing by Paddy Chayefsky was excellent as was the directing by Delbert Mann.
The pacing was excellent and it made for a very good 90 minutes. Excellent ending with a great finishing line.
