Review of Martin (1978) by Kurt F — 19 Jun 2007
Everyone seems to always associate George Romero with his "Dead" films. This is really kind of sad, because those movies are important to the horror world to be sure, but they're not that great.
He has so many other films outside of that quadrilogy of movies that are amazing, and really show what a talented filmmaker he really is. "Martin" is one of those. It was shot very early in his career, but I would argue it's his best work to date.
It's a truly unique spin on the vampire mythology, taking it out of the realm of haunted castles, sharp teeth, and bats, and installs it into a modern day, realistic setting. It isn't even ever really clear if Martin really is a vampire, or he's just a messed up kid.
I could say so much more, but just go see it. Most will hate it. Some will absolutely love it. Definitely on my top ten list.
