Review of Martin (1978) by Kieran M — 01 Aug 2007
There's something about this movie that JUST WORKS. On the surface, the acting seems pretty shakey, and the story-arc is almost flatlining.
Yet looking a bit deeper, one has to admire the subtle, almost heartbreaking character study that this film presents.
Those looking for a straight-ahead vampire movie will be disappointed with this film (and likely frustrated by the positive reviews it garners). It isn't straight-ahead action, nor straight-ahead horror. It's... something different altogether.
If nothing else, one has to admire the incredible editing job that Romero pulls-off on this film. It's razor-sharp (ha!), split-second and full of beautiful juxtapositions. The opening scene of an attack in a train-car is one of the most perfectly-edited 4-minutes of film ever.
