Review of Martin (1978) by Tom F — 18 Sep 2007
Another quality film from Romero. Made for $75,000 a tiny amount even in 1978, this film transcends its limited budget with a clever twist on the old vampire story. Is Martin really a vampire or just a psychopathic killer?.
Blood letting is quite thin on the ground here in exchange for more character development for the central character. Like Cronenberg, Romero writes quite alot of his films as well as directing and overseeing the whole thing.
The dialogue is a bit clunky in places and the acting occasionally a bit wooden, but when considering many of the people 'acting' in the film are simply relatives of the cameraman or the sound guy being an extra, its pretty good!.
The true embodiment of an independent filmmaker, Romero proves that even with practically no money, you can put something engaging on the screen.
