Review of Martian Child (2007) by Andy G — 10 Jun 2011
7.8/10.
This movie kept me guessing throughout the movie, and that always is good in my opinion, even if the mystery wasn't as important as the rest of the plot.
John Cusack was great as always. I also thought that the relationship between all the characters was very believable and realistic. All too often kids acting is very poor, and obviously that's because usually they haven't had a whole lot of practice, so it's not necessarily their fault. Fortunately, that's not a problem in this movie. The kid playing Dennis did a great job of acting as the character he was given.
As you may have noticed from my reviews, I try to reveal as little as possible about the plot of a movie from my reviews. I've found myself that I enjoy movies much better if I never see a trailer. Obviously, sometimes you need to see a trailer to even know about a movie, but I believe once you are committed to watch a movie, you don't need trailers or clips, and watching them simply diminishes the movie watching experience. Trailers and clips tend to show the best parts of movies, especially in comedy and action movies. All the best jokes or effects are always shown, and therefore aren't as exciting or funny when you watch them in the theater or at home.
I personally use netflix, and simply rent movies based on the recommendations it has given me, without reading the descriptions or watching any clips. Obviously I'm not going to love every movie, but then what use would my ratings be if I did. I personally believe I've hugely improved the movie (and tv) watching experience by avoiding even the smallest of spoilers. Yes, even knowing the name of an actor in a movie or tv episode can be considered a spoiler. Sometimes I'm watching a movie, not knowing a certain actor will be in it, and then when they show up, I get excited. This wouldn't have happened if I looked at imdb for the cast or watched a trailer for example.
