Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Rob L — 10 Feb 2013
After his staggeringly nasty turn in Winter's Bone, this film features another memorable performance from John Hawkes, all controlled menace and passive aggression as the head honcho of a chillingly amoral cult holed up in the Catskills.
Hawkes's is the best of a raft of excellent roles - Elizabeth Olsen is striking as the star while the independent school inflections of Olsen's brother-in-law continues the tradition of silly, spoilt Brits in American film. Possibly a little underrated and without question well worth seeing for its brooding ambiguity.
