Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Duckhost — 08 Mar 2019
When I first saw the title of this movie I got really intrigued, then I noticed Elizabeth Olsen stars in it. Then, I watched the movie and got very mixed feelings about it. MMMM it's a very dark and atmospheric movie but it does NOTHING special with it.
I guess the cult was very inspired by Charles Manson but the development of the cult itself is very boring and not well made. When the movie begins she has already left the cult and it cuts back and forth between past and present day with her sister, and that is another bad part of the movie.
This is, in a nutshell, a 1 hour and 44 minutes collection of scenes, mostly about what the cult did Marcy but none of them actually says anything interesting or something that you have seen before. The acting is very good especially in Olsen's case but like I said there aren't interesting scenes or any character development to make it something special about this movie it just enters the bland zone.
Oh, this movie has some very nice scene transitions, really great ones actually the editor did a fine job, but other than that is just shot and reverse shot. Great transitions though.
