Novelistic cult story relies heavily on flashback, but the way the clues are carefully meted out feels less great art than clever craftsmanship. Thus all involved are spared conviction - of character and of word.
Great flashes of terror, but a cult movie that can't affect us with the thrill of belief isn't quite delivering the goods.
