Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Eytan D — 27 Sep 2013
A haunting and eerie indie drama, "Martha Marcy May Marlene" captures one of the most disturbing portrayals of a cult on screen while still managing to find the frightening humanity in it all.
The cast is terrific here. Everyone from Sarah Paulson to Hugh Dancy to the incredible John Hawkes put in a tremendous amount of effort. But the one to really keep your eye on is Mary-Kate and Ashley's sister, Elizabeth Olsen.
Fresh out of acting school, Olsen creates a beautifully broken and sad soul in Martha. Her attempt at recovery is deeply hindered by the dark memories of the cult she escaped from, and Olsen gets that right perfectly.
It's a debut to remember.
