Review of Marshall (2017) by Magnus S — 30 Dec 2017
3/5 Stars.
I went into this really hoping for something great. I don't know much about the background of Thurgood Marshall and this seemed like it could be very interesting.
In the end it was fine, but felt like it could have been much more.
It focuses in on one case that Thurgood litigated as a microcosm of the time and his career. The movie did a good job of setting the context of the time and showing how Thurgood's experience as an African American wasn't completely dissimilar from the antisemitism felt by his Jewish colleague (with WWII in the background).
The movie tries to be both a bio-pic and a courtroom drama at the same time and does an OK, but not great, job at both.
