Review of Married Life (2008) by Philip S — 01 Sep 2010
A retro film in more ways than one. It harkens back to the simpler film noir yarns of yesteryear, but nowadays it just doesn't cut it. The film hinges largely on the choices and motivations of Brosnan and McAdams' characters and I just wasn't sold.
Brosnan's motivations, especially, are simply glossed over in the opening scene and what follows is a direct result of that moment. The more complicated it got, the less I cared about the characters or their happiness.
When everyone is selfish and disloyal, who do you root for? The film itself is not entertaining enough to simply "enjoy the ride". Casting McAdams opposite Cooper was more than a bit bizarre.
That certainly didn't help. Not a bad movie; just not of much worth.
